Gender Reveal Mini Cupcakes- Easy Idea for a Gender Reveal

gender-reveal-cupcakes-blackboard.jpg

Just found out your baby’s gender and want to announce it in a special and memorable way? Popping balloons filled with confetti, releasing smoke bombs or poppers are popular ideas to announce the sex of your baby. But when you don’t have the time (or energy) to plan these more extravagant ideas what are some other options?

I’m currently pregnant with our second child and we just found out at our 20 week scan that we are having a boy (our first was a girl)! I’ve seen plenty of gender reveal cakes but instead I thought it would be fun to make some gender reveal cupcakes to take to work and share the news with my colleagues. I decided on cupcakes rather than cake so each person gets to experience the excitement personally as they bite into it rather than simply watching me cut the cake to reveal the coloured centre. Also, as we are still socially distancing during these Covid times I thought cupcakes would be the safer option by avoid cake cutting and touching it with hands.

So, like me, if you are short on time and want a simple yet effective way to celebrate the exciting news these cupcakes with the secret coloured centre are a great (and best of all easy) gender reveal idea. A particularly great idea because I had all the ingredients in my pantry so no extra trip to the shops required! They’re also something that older siblings can help make and share in the excitement. My 3 year old daughter loved helping make these, especially mixing in the food colouring.

Here’s my gender reveal cupcake recipe and step by step instructions:

Ingredients

Butter cake mix

Butter cake mix

For the butter cream icing:

Method

Cupcakes:

1.       Preheat oven to 180 degrees

2.       Grab a mixing bowl and add in your cake mix, eggs, milk and butter. Mix on medium speed for 3 minutes and that’s it for the cupcakes!

3.       Fill your cupcake pan with patty pans (I used my mini cupcake tin and used half pink and half blue patty pans).

4.       Spoon the mixture into the patty pans. Only fill them halfway as they will rise.

5.       Cook for 10 minutes

6.       While they’re cooking you can begin preparing the icing.

Icing:

1.       Beat the butter until creamy

2.       Gradually add the icing sugar and milk

3.       Once thick and creamy texture take out half of the mixture in a separate bowl to bu=e used for the inside of the cupcakes

4.       Add your desired food colouring to the half of the icing mixture

Now for the fun part! Time to fill the cupcake centre with your pink or blue icing.

Filling the cupcakes:

1.       Prepare a piping bag with the coloured icing (or simply grab a ziplock bag a snip the corner).

2.       Once the cupcakes have cooled, core each cupcake using a piping tip. Don’t discard the cake you have removed.

3.       Pipe the coloured icing in the middle of the cupcake then fill the hole with the core you just removed.

Icing the cupcakes

1.       Prepare another piping bag with the other half of the butter cream icing

2.       Ice the top of the cupcakes and decorate
